MORRIS — Despite a school-record 40-point effort from senior Mya Shannon on Tuesday, the Morris girls basketball team dropped a 66-64 non-conference decision to Plano.
The Redskins (2-3) took control of the game in the second quarter. After the teams battled to a 6-6 tie after one quarter, with freshman Kennedy Dransfeldt scoring all of the Morris points, Shannon heated up in the second. The senior guard riddled the Plano defense for 18 points in the second, helping Morris build a 31-17 halftime lead.
Shannon kept the nets burning in the third quarter, tossing in 12 more, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, to give Morris a 51-40 lead heading into the fourth.
Plano turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth and opened the quarter on a 12-2 run to close to within 53-52. With 4:10 to play, Morris' Paige Valentine made a pair of free throws to put the Redskins ahead 55-52, but Plano's Makayli Vann, who finished with 31 points, made two free throws with 3:40 to play to make it 55-54. Plano's Madelyn Jude then stole the inbounds pass and went in for a layup to give the Reapers a 56-55 lead.
Plano built the advantage to 61-55 before Shannon made a free throw with 1:47 to play. She scored on a short jumper with 1:18 to play to make it 62-58 and answered a pair of free throws by Plano's Kay Thwaites with a pair of her own at the 1:08 mark to pull Morris to within 64-60.
With :55.8 left, Morris Carli Foddrill made a free throw to pull Morris to within 66-61. Plano then missed a pair of free throws, and Shannon hit a three-pointer with :35 left to make it 66-64. After Plano missed two more free throws, Shannon missed a three-pointer, but the ball went out of bounds off of Plano with 1.7 seconds left. Alisson Bojovic received the inbounds pass in the left corner, but her three-point attempt went off the rim as time expired.
"I was real happy with the way we played," Morris coach Kate Carey said. "The last couple of games, we weren't as aggressive as I would like us to be, but tonight we were. We know that this is going to be a season where the win-loss record may not be what we want, but we want to improve every time out. I thought we improved tonight."
Dransfeldt finished with 15 points and added 15 rebounds, while Shannon had a team-high 19 boards. Bojovic had nine rebounds for the Redskins, while Gigi Corban had four points and six boards.
"We did a good job of rebounding," Carey said. "In the second half, we didn't control the tempo like we wanted. Plano sped the game up and tired us out a bit.
"Kennedy Dransfeldt had a real good game. She is getting more confident every time out. All the girls
