Coal City boys take fifth in I-8 tourney

COAL CITY – The Coal City boys basketball team finished higher than their seed in the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament after posting a 55-45 win over Plano in the fifth-place game.

The Coalers (11-10), who were seeded seventh, outscored Plano, 29-17, in the second and third quarters after being tied at 15 at the end of the first.

“We were hoping to finish a little higher, but we are proud of how we played.” Coal City coach Keith Kiper said. “We came in with the seventh seed and finished fifth, which is a nice improvement. The team played really well in the games against Seneca and Plano to finish.

Austin Pullara led Coal City with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Sean Micetich, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 14 points and seven boards. Payton Hutchings added eight points and Kaleb Spreitzer scored seven.

Boys swimming

Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet: Morris finished fifth Saturday in Sterling. The Redskins placed three swimmers on the All-Conference team. Garrett Kirkland placed first in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 200 individual medley, Tyler Ratcliff placed first in diving, and Christopher Collet took sixth in the 50 freestyle,

Girls basketball

Minooka 47, Plainfield South 31: Cierra Bachmann led Minooka (19-7) with 19 points. Sydney Andreano added 11.

Minooka 50, Joliet West 33: Minooka’s Cierra Bachmann led with 22 points. Teammate Sophie Darden added eight.

Gardner-South Wilmington 49, St. Anne 31: Paige Patterson scored 15 points Monday to lead the a attack for the Panthers (18-9, 10-1) in the River Valley Conference win. Carson Halpin added 10 points, while Madelyn Storm scored nine points and Emma Hennessy added eight.

Kankakee 60, Coal City 46: The Lady Coalers (10-17) trailed by just a point at halftime, but Kankakee pulled away in the second half. Bridget Kauzlaric led Coal City with 20 points, while Makenna Crater added nine. Coal City won the JV game, 30-25, as Madison Emerson led with 10 points.

Girls bowling

Morris 3,143, Yorkville, 3,017: The Lady Redskins won two of the three games and took the match to finish with a 7-2 record in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference. Olivia Schultz led Morris, which hosts the NIB 12 meet Thursday, with a 642 series, while Cadenz Fitzgerald rolled 604. Lexi Lewis had a season-high 232 game in her 550 series.

Grade school volleyball

Marseilles 7th grade 25-25, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 20-23: Leslie Klicker had 10 service points, including seven aces, for MVK (2-6). Izzy Humphrey had two kills.

Marseilles 8th grade 25-17-25, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 22-25-23: Leslie Klicker had 13 points, including six aces, for MVK (3-5). Emma Smith led with five kills.

Youth soccer

Channahon Park District: The last day to register for the Channahon Park District’s Co-ed Youth Spring Soccer league is Sunday, Feb. 18. Boys and girls ages 4 to 14 as of April 21, 2018, are invited to join the spring league.

Volunteer parent coaches are needed. The fee for the league is only $74 for residents and $94 for nonresidents.

A girls-only league also is available for girls ages 6 to 14.

Registration for the Co-ed Spring Soccer League must be done in person at Arrowhead Community Center (24856 W. Eames St., Channahon) or Heritage Crossing Field House (24935 W. Sioux Drive, Channahon).

The spring league offers the opportunity for learning fundamental soccer skills and good sportsmanship. Practices begin the week of April 9, and games are played on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning April 21 and ending June 16.
