Introducing the 2017-2018 Morris Herald-News Girls Basketball All-Area Team.

First team

Cierra Bachmann, junior, Minooka

Averaged 14.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game... Also had 131 deflections and 109 steals... All-Southwest Prairie Conference and All Tournament at Lincoln Way East Holiday Tournament... Coach Ray Liberatore: “Cierra had a breakout year and was a force on both ends of the court. She set a school record with her number of steals.”

Savannah Johnson, junior, Minooka

Averaged 10.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game... Shot 48 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line... All-Southwest Prairie Conference and All-Tournament at Lincoln-Way East Holiday Tournament... Coach Ray Liberatore: “Savannah is one of the top centers in the area. She improved her mid-range shooting and continued to be our top rebounder. She is also a great leader.”

Lyda Robinson, senior, Seneca

Averaged 11.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game... Had 1,144 points in her career... Had 101 steals this season, and a school-record 440 in her career... All-Interstate Eight Conference for third straight year... All-Tournament at Somonauk Tipoff Tourney, St. Bede Christman Tourney and I-8 Conference Tourney... Coach Ted O’Boyle: “Lyda was the leader of our regional championship team that finished 21-11. She finished fifth on our all-time scoring list.”

Meggie Scott, sophomore, Newark

Helped lead team to 23-7 overall record and Class 1A regional championship... Led team in points, assists, steals, field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage... Averaged 11.7 points, 7.1 assists, 4.6 steals, and 3.0 rebounds per game... Shot 50 percent from 2-point range, 34 percent from 3-point range and 73 percent from the free-throw line,,, She currently has 572 points in her first two years as a varsity point guard... Unanimous
Little Ten All-Conference Team,
Ottawa Holiday All-Tournament Team, IBCA 4th Team All-State... Coach Barb Scott: “Meggie is a tremendous floor leader and a ‘coach on the court.’
She has phenomenal court vision and is a strong ball handler to the right or the left. She is a complete point guard who makes everyone around her better offensively and defensively.”

Mya Shannon, senior, Morris

All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference, Prairie Central Thanksgiving All-Tournament, Ottawa Holiday All-Tournament, Team MVP... Morris Herald-News Player of the Year 2016-17 and 2017-18... Holds school records for career scoring (1,558 points), single-season scoring (551 points) and single game scoring (40 points)... Will play for DePauw
University... Averaged 20.5 points,
9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game... Shot 37.3 percent from
the field and 74.4 percent from the
free-throw line... Advanced to state
competition in Class 3A 3-Point Showdown... Coach Kate Carey: “Mya is a relentless basketball player. Nobody plays harder than she does. She spent most the season facing a box-and-1 defense, double teams, or being face guarded and was still able to put up big numbers. She is very well respected by her opponents and always displays great sportsmanship. She will be greatly missed in our program, but we are excited for her continued success as she continues her basketball career.”

Second team

Makenna Crater, junior, Coal City

Averaged 9.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game... All-Interstate Eight Conference... Coach Brad Schmitt: “Makenna was our main 3-point threat this year. We ran her off as many screens as we could and she was a consistent player all year long and somebody who just got open enough and was able to score get 8-11 points. Our success would have been severely limited without her at the offensive end.”

Bridget Kauzlaric, senior, Coal City

Averaged 12.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game... Led team in points, steals, assists, free throws and rebounds from the point guard position... All-Interstate Eight Conference selection... Repeat Morris Herald-News All-Area selection... Coach Brad Schmitt: “Bridget was our engine, a three-year varsity starter who proved her worth in some big games for us this year. She was our best player who always carried us offensively and defensively each game.”

Kaitlynn Kavanaugh, sophomore, Gardner-South Wilmington

Averaged 11 points, 7.3 rebounds,
2.6 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game... All-River Valley Conference first-team selection and All-Tournament at Iroquois West Holiday Tournament... Coach Adam Leigh: “For a sophomore, Kaitlynn has been a dominant force. She only played in 4 out of 10 conference games and the other coaches still voted her onto first team all conference. There is no doubt in my mind that had she been healthy all season, she would’ve scored at least
300 points on the season. She missed the last nine games of the year and still had more points than anyone else on the team.”

Lexi Greve, junior, Seneca

Averaged 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game... Also had 40 blocked shots... All-Interstate Eight Conference... All-Tournament at St Bede Christmas Tourney.... Coach Ted O’Boyle: “Lexi had a great season for us, and we are looking for big things from her next year.”

Jocelyn Mitchell, sophomore, Newark

Averaged 8.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game... Unanimous All-Little Ten Conference selection.

Honorable mentions

Sophie Darden, sophomore, Minooka

Helped lead Minooka to 23-7 record and Class 4A Plainfield South Regional title.

Abriana Jashari, junior, Seneca

Averaged 6.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game... Also had 82 steals.., Special Mention All-Interstate Eight Conference... Coach Ted O’Boyle: “Abriana will be counted on heavily to fill Lyda’s shoes next season. She is
a strong 3-point shooter and will
be asked to do a lot of things next year.”

Madi Malone, freshman, Newark

Averaged 7.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game... Shot 41 percent from the field.

Evie Martin, junior, Newark

Averaged 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game... Shot 43 percent from the field.

Paige Patterson, sophomore, Gardner-South Wilmington

Averaged 6.8 points,
2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.6 steals per game... All-River Valley Conference
second-team selection... Coach Adam Leigh: “Paige is a player who got a lot better as the season went along.
Her stats don’t necessarily show how valuable she was, but she was by far
our best defender and just has a work ethic and a hustle that you cannot teach.”

Kaylee Steichen, senior, Gardner-South Wilmington

Average 6.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.5 steals per game... All-River Valley Conference first-team selection... Coach Adam Leigh: “Kaylee was one of our captains this season, and one of our leading scorers after Kaitlynn. She was hard to guard this season because she was the tallest player on our team but played a guard spot.”

Madelyn Storm, sophomore, Gardner-South Wilmington

Averaged 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game... All-River Valley Conference special mention selection... Coach Adam Leigh: “Madelyn did not start the season as one of the starting five but after Kaitlynn got injured, she started for us and filled in nicely.”
