DeKALB – The DeKalb softball team couldn’t get their bats going in a 2-0 loss to conference foe Morris.
Morris pitcher Gigi Corban blanked the Barbs (5-11, 0-6 in Northern Illinois Big 12), allowing only one hit in seven innings.
“She was lights out today,” Morris coach Jennifer Bamonte said. “When she works ahead and we can utilize all of her pitches, Its hard to hit. Today she was on.”
Corban struck out at least one batter in every inning and totaled 11 strikeouts on her way to the complete game victory.
“Today, she was just unhittable," Bamonte said. "I almost felt bad for batters because she was hitting every spot possible.”
Ashley Phelps and Claire Gugerty brought heavy sticks for Morris (13-10, 3-5) in the fourth inning as both hit solo home runs to score the only runs of the game.
Newport pitched a gem of her own, striking out two and scattering three hits in five innings of work, but two of those hits were home runs.
The Barbs' only hit of the game came in the fourth inning when Mallory Warner dropped a bunt single, barely beating the throw to first to break up Corban’s no-hit bid.
“I thought they had a lot of confidence today,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “A 2-0 (loss), we can live with that. We played solid defense today.”
