MORRIS – Two bridges in Grundy County soon will receive some work after the Grundy County board passed a resolution Tuesday awarding bids. The work was awarded to two local firms.

D Construction of Coal City was awarded the contract for work on the Braceville Road with a low bid of $974,308. Riber Construction of Dwight received the work for the Grand Ridge Road bridge with a low bid of $793,263.

Illinois Department of Transportation conducted the bid letting Aug. 3. Federal funds will be used for 8 percent of the total costs for the projects. Grundy County will pay for its portion of the Braceville Road Bridge out of motor fuel tax funds and will pay for its portion of the Grand Ridge Road bridge out of county bridge funds.

Dresden agreement extension

The county board also approved a plan to extend its property tax assessment settlement agreement with Exelon Generation Company over the Dresden Power station for an additional year.

Grundy County administrator George Gray said that the county along with other taxing bodies - Gooselake Township, Gooselake Township Road District, Coal City School District 1, Joliet junior College District 525, Coal City Fire Protection District and Coal City Public Library District - entered into an agreement in 2014 on the equalized assessed valuation for the power station property. That agreement expired after 2017. Exelon has requested an extension of the agreement for one year.

Under the agreement extension, Dresden has an EAV of $490 million for the 2018 tax year. Grundy County
$3.5 million tax money from the station.

The total amount paid out by Exelon for the Dresden property to all the taxing bodies will be about $24 million. Coal City Schools receives the largest payment of almost $16 million.

Animal control fees

The board placed on file a new fee schedule for municipalities that utilize Grundy County Animal Control services. The board also approved a new micro-chipping ordinance amendment that will lessen costs for individuals whose pets are micro-chipped while in Animal Control.

Illinois law requires any dog or cat leaving a shelter be micro-chipped, Gray told the board. At current rates that can cost the owner between $45 and $60. The new amendment puts the cost at $20.
