MORRIS – On Monday, the Morris Community High School District 101 Board passed a $17.1 million budget for fiscal 2019 that district Superintendent Joseph Waldron described as “kind of a mixed bag of winners and losers.”
“This is about version six of the budget,” he said.
He said the deficit for the education fund was at one point as high as
$2.5 million. However, subsequent revisions brought that number down.
“We’ve got it down to just over a
$2 million deficit,” Waldron said.
The plan is to cover the deficit with money from the working cash that includes a $1.7 million bond sale.
The budget as a whole, however, is close to being balanced, Waldron said.
“Across all funds, if you total up all expenditures and all revenue, the budget is actually within $40,000 of being balanced,” he said.

At a public hearing on the budget before the board’s regular board meeting, there was no public participation.
Student body elections
Andrew Barlow, MCHS student body president, updated the board on changes in the student body elections voting process.
Now, each election is done electronically, and voting is tied to a student’s email address, preventing anyone from voting more than once or in the wrong grade level.
Barlow said the changes have increased student participation in the elections.
“We had the largest student turnout in years,” Barlow told the board.
The board also learned the results of an audit by Morris accounting firm Mack and Associates. The district received a clean audit.
