Fecarota, charged in murder of infant, pleads not guilty

MORRIS – A Minooka man charged with killing a 3-week old baby pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Nicholas Fecarota, 18, was represented by Chicago attorney Stephen Richards.

At the preliminary hearing, Richards told the court that he had just seen the evidence presented in discovery and that he was looking for a December date for the next status hearing. In doing so, it would push Fecarota's trial to January at the earliest.

After conferring with Richards, Fecarota waived his right to a speedy trial.

Richards also said the defense would most likely file a motion to suppress Fecarota's statement to the police, as there were questions about whether or not Fecarota understood the Miranda warnings.

Fecarota faces two first-degree murder charges after Minooka police responded to a call the afternoon of Aug. 24. Upon arriving, investigators discovered the baby had a fractured skull. The baby was transferred to Morris Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m. that day.

“When Mr. Fecarota was interviewed, he admitted to throwing the baby multiple times to stop the baby from crying," according to a press release issued at the time by the Minooka police.

Fecarota is currently held in the Grundy County Jail.
