Election 2018: Sen. Sue Rezin, of Morris, cruises past Heidi Henry, of Marseilles, in 38th District Senate race

Senator gets 60 percent of vote

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, was the victor in Tuesday's race for the 38th District Senate, which takes in much of La Salle County. Rezin's election night headquarters was at the Eagles Club in Morris. Her opponent was Democrat Heidi Henry, of rural Marseilles.

Incumbent Republican Sue Rezin fended off Democratic challenger Heidi Henry in Tuesday’s voting for 38th District state senator.

Rezin pulled in 45,415 votes to Henry’s 30,846 according to unofficial numbers, which works out to 60 percent for Rezin.

“I’m honored and appreciate the support I received. I will continue to work with those across the aisle. People understand where I’m coming from and respect me, even if they don’t agree. I’m honest about where I stand and I work very hard,” Rezin said.

Rezin noted Tuesday she is experienced with campaigning, as Tuesday was her fourth election and “we run elections very well.”

Henry chalked up her loss to having “little money and no support or guidance” from the state Democratic Party.

“This was a lot of fun. I met wonderful people and enjoyed the journey,” Henry pointed out.

Calling herself a conservative, Rezin, 55, of Morris, has been in office since December 2010. Henry, 57, of rural Marseilles, identified herself as a Democrat in the mold of Franklin Roosevelt.

The 38th District takes in all of Putnam County and parts of La Salle, Livingston, Grundy, Kendall, Bureau and Will counties.

The only area where Henry appeared to draw greater support than Rezin, was in the part of Bureau County covered by the 38th District, where Henry garnered 2,296 votes to Rezin’s 2,259. In all other areas of the district, Rezin had clear margins of victory. In La Salle County, Rezin received 20,599 votes to Henry’s 15,083 in unofficial tallies.
