Health department reminds residents to get flu shots

Don’t let the flu give you the holiday blues. The Grundy County Health Department would like to remind everyone we’re still offering adult and children’s influenza vaccinations by appointment every week. Few people get vaccinated against flu after the end of November, but flu activity most commonly peaks between December and February and can last as late as May.

CDC recommends that everyone six months and older who has not been vaccinated yet this season, get vaccinated now. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that provide protection against influenza virus infection.

Flu vaccine by appointment is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This year the health department has Fluzone High Dose quadrivalent flu vaccine for persons 65 years of age and older. This flu vaccine was made just for senior citizens to give them better protection from the flu while covering 4 common strains of the flu virus. The High Dose is covered by Medicare Part B with no cost to the senior. The cost without Medicare Part B is $65.

The health department also offers Flublok quadrivalent adult flu vaccine for adults 19 years of age and up for $65. This dose covers four common strains of the flu and studies have shown the vaccine to provide increased protection against the flu when compared to other regular adult flu vaccines. The vaccine also is egg free so it can be given to adults who have an egg allergy.

Please bring your insurance card with you to the clinic on the day of your appointment. Grundy County Health Department accepts the following insurance plans for most medical services offered: Medicare, Medicaid, BCBS of IL PPO, BCBS Blue Choice, BCBS MCO, Harmony MCO, Illinicare MCO, Meridian MCO and United Healthcare. Clients are encouraged to contact their specific insurance carrier to determine plan benefits. Clients are responsible for all charges incurred for services rendered.

For questions or to make an appointment, call the Grundy County Health Department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 815-941-3404.
