Morris ends Plano tourney on high note

Redskins top Mendota in final game

PLANO — The Morris boys basketball team finished the 56th annual Plano Holiday Classic on a winning note after suffering three straight losses, the last two by just one point each.

The Redskins (5-8) defeated Mendota, 42-36, in the 15th-place game in the 16-team event on Saturday.

Morris' defense, which was stingy throughout the tournament, helped build a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter against Mendota, and the Redskins led 11-8 at halftime. Morris outscored Mendota, 12-4, in the third quarter to take a 23-12 lead into the fourth. Both teams' offenses picked up in the fourth, as Mendota outscored Morris, 24-19, but it was not enough to overcome the Redskins. Opponents averaged just 46 points against Morris in the four games of the tournament.

Jacob Overbeck led Morris with 18 points, including hitting 4 of 7 from three-point range. Jack Walker made 2 of 4 three-point attempts and finished with six points, while Colin Cummings had eight points. The Redskins also outrebounded the Trojans, 27-18, with Overbeck pulling in a team-high eight boards.

Morris began tournament play Wednesday against Lisle and dropped a 61-42 decision. The Lions led throughout, taking a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 24-14 halftime lead. The advantage moved to 40-23 entering the fourth quarter.

Cummings and Overbeck each scored 12 points to lead Morris in the tourney opener, while Logan Edwards added five points.

In a consolation round game on Thursday, Morris fell, 50-49, to tourney host Plano, despite taking a 41-37 lead into the fourth quarter. The Redskins trailed 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and narrowed it to 26-25 at halftime before rallying to take the lead at the end of the third.

Cummings led Morris with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Overbeck scored 14, Walker had nine and Chatten Dryfhout had seven points to go with seven rebounds.

The brackets conspired to match Morris with Coal City for the third time this season Friday, and the Coalers pulled out a 37-36 victory over the Redskins.

Again, the Redskins took a lead into the fourth quarter, only to see Coal City outscore them 15-5 in the final period to pull out the win. Morris led 7-5 at the end of one quarter, 17-12 at halftime and 31-22 entering the fourth.

Cummings scored a team-high 13 points for Morris, while Walker added 11. Overbeck scored six points and Ryan Lain added four to go with his team-high seven rebounds.
