MORRIS – The new Morris Secretary of State Office has a tentative open date of March 5, according to Jesse White's office.
“This new facility in Morris will be conveniently located and is only two miles from the former facility,” White said in a press release. “As our lease at the previous facility was set to expire and the owner of that space wished to move in a different direction, it was my priority to find a new location in Morris.”
The old Morris facility closed after the end of business on Dec. 22. The closure was not announced until the day before, with Deputy Press Secretary Henry Haupt saying at the time they wanted plans finalized before announcing the change.
The new facility is scheduled to open March 5, but Haupt cautioned that with construction projects, that date can always change. The facility will be located at 425 E. Route 6 in Morris, east of where Walmart and Aldi are located.
The new facility is approximately 2,500 square feet, which is about 300 square feet larger than the former facility that had been located at 2413 Sycamore St.
"White’s office has been working with the new landlord who, as part of the 10-year lease agreement, is in charge of making necessary modifications to the building," the release said. "These modifications, standard when opening a Driver Services facility at a new site, are designed to maximize the facility’s traffic flow and efficiency."
Employees of the Morris office were transferred to other nearby Secretary of State facilities to continue working while their branch was shut down.
