NORMAL — The Morris and Seneca boys and girls track teams were among the 48 schools that took part in the Normal University High Invitational over the weekend.
Morris' Alejando Ochoa and Nic Davy finished 1-2 in the boys 200-meter dash, with Ochoa taking the top spot with a time of 23.28 and Davy finishing second in 23.37. Morris' Jase Cole finished 20th with a time of 24.78 in the event. Ochoa also finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.98, with Cole taking fourth place in 53.43 and teammate Francisco Perez finishing 37th in 57.46.
Austin Hatcher took third in the shot put for Morris with a throw of 46-1, while Sean Smith was 50th in the event (32-3). Hatcher also took seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.98) and was 11th in the 60-meter dash (7.31). The Morris 4x200-meter relay team took second place with a time of 1:34.95, while Dan Grant was third in the pole vault with a jump of 13-6.
Ryan Lain took sixth in the high jump (5-100 for Morris, while Caleg Holliday (5-6) was 13th. Davy finished 12th in the long jump (19-3), while Lain was 31st (17-9 1/4). The Morris 4x800 relay finished 19th with a time of 9:43.96.
Grant placed 57th in the 800-meter run (2:31.03), while Joe Purcell was 59th (2:31.21) and Kevin Pruess (2:33.55) was 65th. Tony Pethtel finished 48th in the 1600-meter run (5:08.90), while Alex Warrick (5:22.27) was 58th and James Ator (5:26.51) finished 62nd. Holliday finished 33rd (33-0) in the triple jump.
Seneca's top finisher in the meet was Class 1A cross-country champion Christopher Collet, who took eighth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:39.46. Teammate Billy Glasscock finished 35th (5:03.28) in the event, while Wyatt Baldauf (5:13.69) was 52nd.
Ian Wilkinson finished 10th (39-3) in the triple jump for the Irish, while Mason Daggett was 33rd (33-0). Jacob Urusa finished 13th in the high jump (5-6), while Chase Hauch (5-4) was 19th. The 4x800 relay took 15th for Seneca in 9:29.25, while the 4x400 relay (3:54.89) was 16th and the 4x200 relay was 21st in 1:44.33.
Trey Thorsen finished 26th in the long jump for Seneca (18-3 1/2), while Ryan McCauley was 48th (16-4 3/4). Forest Stuedemann finished 51st in the 400 with a time of 59.74, while Thorsen was 49thin the 200 (26.24), Jace Casey (26.43) was 54th and Mason Daggett was 64th (27.24). In the 800-meter run, Seneca's Spencer DeGraaf was 62nd in 2:32.45, Noah Petty (2:34.00) was 66th, and Logan Daggett (2:36.02) was 69th.
In the girls meet, Morris' Gina Misek took third in the long jump (17-3), fourth in the 200 (26.99) and seventh in the 60-meter dash (8.17). Alexis Johnson was 13th in the 200 (28.45), whilee Kyla Kjellesvik (29.76) was 30th. In the 60-meter hurdles, Alexis Smyk took 16th with a time of 10.98, while Alex Spaulding was 19th in 11.33.
In the 400-meter dash, Abbi McKinney (1:09.15) finished 18th, Kjellesvik (1:10.81) was 25th, and Spaulding (1:14.57) took 37th. The Morris 4x200 relay finished eighth in 1:56.43, while the 4x800 relay was 11th in 11:46.99. Bridget Landrs took 23rd in the 1600 (6:14.32), while Teagan Sandvick (6:21.28) was 28th and Abby Cunningham (6:35.19) was 31st. In the 800-meter run, Sophie Mennenga took 41st in 3:28.58, Delaney Jones was 42nd in 3:32.21, and Makahla Gilkerson was 44th in 3:38.79.
Seneca's Brooklyn Giertz took third in the pole vault (9-8), while teammate Amber Vroman (8-8) was sixth. Giertz also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.14. The Seneca 4x800 relay finished sixth in 11:14.43 and the 4x400 relay was seventh in 4:39.57. Grace Alley finished fourth in the triple jump (34-6) and Justine Ursua was 11th (31-2). Lexi Greve finished sixth in the high jump (4-6), while Riley Johnson was 22nd (4-2).
Mara Bruno finished seventh in the 200-meter dash (27.77), while Kaitlyn Ehrler (29.28) was 22nd and Taylor Draves (29.58) finished 27th. Bruno was also 12th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.28. Audrey Jenkins finished eighth in the 800-meter run (2:37.60), while Vroman (2:47.88) was 18th and Natalie Carajohn took 25th in 2:53.40. Carissa Simon took eighth in the long jump (15-7), while Draves (14-1) was 23rd. Jenkins finished 11th in the 1600-meter run in 5:56.13, while Marie Cheshareck (6:39.83) was 35th, and Delaney Walsh (7:04.52) was 39th. Ursua finished 14th in the 400-meter dash (1:08.39), while Emma Smith (1:09.74) was 21st and Riley Johnson (1:16.68) finished 46th.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Running Redskins' Baseball Bash: The annual fundraising event for the Morris baseball team will be held Saturday, March 9 from 4-8 p.m. at the Morris VFW Hall, located at 309 McKinley St. in Morris. Tickets are $25 and include one entry into the draw down, which begins at 5 p.m., food, drink, and silent and live auctions. The ball park dining includes brats, hot dogs, pizza, bash potatoes, treats, refreshments and more.
Joliet Junior College 14, College of DuPage 6: Seneca's Rachel Sangston and Coal City's Paityn Smith each pitched three innings as the Wolves opened their season with the win. Morris' Ashley Phelps had a pair of hits as well.
JJC 14 Harper 1: Minooka's Mackenzie Melendez had four hits and three RBIs for JJC, while Morris' Allison Kukman pitched two innings of a combined no-hitter.
Rock Valley College 14, JJC 6: Morris' Ashley Phelps slugged a three-run homer for the Wolves in the loss to the NJCAA's top-ranked Division III team.
JJC 9, South Suburban 5: Winning pither Paityn Smith of Coal City struck out eight in six innings, while Seneca's Rachel Sangston struck out two in an inning of relief.
