Local photographers showcase their skills at Goose Lake Prairie in Morris

State lands featured in Goose Lake Prairie annual contest

The 13th Annual Nature Photography Contest/Exhibit was held Aug. 4 though Aug. 11 at the Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area on Pine Bluff Road.

Eighteen people entered their best photos in this year's contest, including two in the youth division. Of a total of 105 prints were received, 18 were in the youth division, showcasing the talents of local young aspiring artists.

Prints were on exhibit in the Visitor Center at the park on Saturday and Sunday.

The members of the Goose Lake Prairie Partners said many exceptional prints were on display, with six prints receiving special attention.

Awards were granted for Best of Show-Adult, Best of Show-Youth, People's Choice-Adults, People's Choice-Youth, Best of Computer Enhanced, and Prairie Partners Pick, along with first, second and third place winners in each category in three different divisions.

Top awards were as follows:

Adult Best of Show — Tom Holmes, Bourbonnais, "Rock Creek Sunset"

Youth Best of Show — Sarah Rossi, Morris, "At the Dock"

Adult People's Choice — John Sullivan III, Crest Hill, "Dinner Time"

Youth People's Choice — Sarah Rossi, Morris, "Thistle"

Judges for the Event were members of the Morris Camera Club, John Zappia, Dr. Robert Engle, and Dr. Larry Johnson.

The annual event is sponsored by the Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area and the Goose Lake Prairie Partners. One of the most involved projects of the year, the Prairie Partners hope the annual event encourages everyone to bring their skills in photography and love of nature in Illinois together in celebration.
