MORRIS — In a volleyball match between two evenly-matched teams in Sycamore and Morris on Thursday, it came down to which team made the fewest mistakes.
In the end, that team was Sycamore, as the Spartans claimed a 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 win over the Redskins (12-13-1).
The match was filled with multiple-point runs on both sides, and that pattern started early. Morris jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game, only to see Sycamore rally for four straight points to tie it. Morris then scored four more in a row to go ahead 8-4, but Sycamore answered with a six-point run for a 10-8 lead. The Spartans eventually went ahead 13-9 before Morris countered with five straight points to move in front, 14-13.
Next was Sycamore, which scored four straight to go ahead 17-14. The teams basically traded points the next few serves and Sycamore held a 21-19 lead when Morris' Abby Bruyn stepped to the service line. Bruyn, who finished the night with 18 service points, served three straight aces to put Morris ahead, 22-21. After Sycamore tied it at 22, Morris scored the next three points, ending the game with an ace by Paige Valentine.
