Local Funeral Home Opening In House Aqua Cremation Center

Aqua Cremation is an eco-friendly, water-based disposition process that offers an alternative to flame cremation or a traditional burial.  The process, alkaline hydrolysis, utilizes a combination of water flow, temperature, and alkalinity to accelerate the process.

"We chose Aqua Cremation as an option for our families for a couple reasons," said John Callahan, Owner and Funeral Director of  U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home.  "The first was to offer an additional cremation choice in our line of services.  Secondly, Aqua Cremation is the most environmentally friendly cremation available.”

The Aqua Cremation process is supported by the Mayo Clinic, the UCLA Medical School, and the UTSW Medical School, all of which have used it to dispose of bodies donated to medical science over the past two decades.  "We believe the most important feature is how gentle the entire process is from start to finish," added Callahan.

The advantages of Aqua Cremation are many; families are grateful to have a choice beyond burial and flame cremation, and they prefer to receive up to 20% more of their loved one's ashes.  Many also value the lesser impact on the environment, as there are no emissions of harmful greenhouse gases or mercury.  Aqua Cremation provides a 90% energy savings versus flame cremation, with only 1/10th of the carbon footprint.

The alkaline hydrolysis process produces remains that are 100% safe to handle, and are free of pathogens.  The ash returned to the family is simply bone mineral, or calcium phosphate.  "No question, Aqua Cremation is on the rise," said Callahan.  "But we believe the value in viewing the body prior to cremation is extremely important.  Viewing the loved one prior to cremation doesn't affect the process in any way."  For more information about Aqua Cremation, please contact:
