Carpet is a terrific flooring choice for homeowners. Not only is it typically less expensive than other types of flooring, it helps to absorb sound, insulates and stabilizes room temperatures, cushions the floor surface, and helps reduce falls from slipping. Carpet adds a nice textural design element, and helps tie together other design features like furniture and window treatments. Here are 3 things to consider when choosing carpet for your home:
1. How is the room being used and who is using it? The amount of foot traffic the room gets and whether there is a water source (such as in a kitchen, bathroom or porch) is one consideration when selecting the right carpet. Nylon carpet will perform better than polyester in heavy traffic areas like stairs and hallways while an olefin carpet is a good choice where there is a lot of direct sunlight, such as a sun porch, as it is resistant to fading. If there is a good chance that the carpet will be subjected to spills and stains, you will want to choose a carpet that has a stain resistant treatment applied to the fibers.
2. What type of texture or pattern do you want? A velvet or saxony cut pile carpet is soft and plush but vacuum marks and footprints are quite apparent. The yarn of a frieze is somewhat twisted or kinked and the appearance of footprints and vacuum marks are visibly reduced. Looped carpets come in several variations: even loops, multi-level loops and cut-and-loop pile. If you have a pet, you are better off with a cut pile carpet rather than anything with a loop as their toenails can snag a looped pile carpet.
3. What is your budget? Several factors come into play in the price of a carpet. Nylon carpets are more expensive than their polyester counterparts but nylon is a longer wearing carpet. Brand name can play a part in the price of the carpet as well. Carpet brands that don’t do a lot of national advertising are not necessarily lower quality, but they can be lower in price, creating savings for you. Carpets with a longer warranty are generally better in quality and the price is reflected accordingly.
