The Morris Police Department warned residents of "porch pirates," people who will steal packages from their doorsteps.

MORRIS — The Morris Police Department put out the following announcement on its Facebook page Wednesday:

On 06-13-20 we took two reports regarding "porch pirate" incidents that occurred in the area of Lisbon Road and Twilight Drive. Porch pirates are thieves who drive around looking for packages to steal from unsuspecting homeowners' porches.

With the ever-increasing use of online shopping and delivery services, we are seeing an increase in this specific type of theft. If you see someone suspicious lurking on your neighbor's front porch, please do not hesitate to call us. In addition, here are some other tips for deterring thieves:

1. Have packages delivered to your work. Delivering packages to a job increases visibility and reduces the chances that your packages might be swiped unexpectedly.

2. Schedule deliveries for times you will be home. This keeps packages from sitting unattended for long periods of time.

3. Buddy up with a neighbor. If they are home during the day, have packages sent there.

4. Require a signature. This extra insurance ensures that you won’t have packages piling up at your door.

5. Monitor your front porch. Security cameras or video doorbells can be used to keep an eye on your packages, deterring thieves from grabbing them off of your property.

In addition, there are several products and services now available to help delivery services secure your item when they deliver it. Just search "Porch Pirate Thefts" or "Porch Pirate Prevention" and you will find many ideas. There is also a support group page called Porch Pirate Victims Support Group / Stolen Packages / Pirates where victims can share videos, stories and prevention ideas.
